How are forklifts divided

How are forklifts divided

  • 2022-12-27

As time has passed, forklifts have tended to specialization. Today there are different types, each trying to meet the specific needs of users. Which are? Here we detail it.

First of all, forklifts can be classified according to the type of engine. So we have, on the one hand, electric forklifts and, on the other, those with internal combustion.

Electric forklift

These forklifts are powered by a large battery, made up of lead acid, which can last up to 8 hours. They are silent and non-polluting equipment, which is why they are very convenient for use indoors and in closed spaces.

4 Ton Diesel forklift Truck

The engines of these forklifts run on gasoline, LPG or diesel. Unlike electric ones, these equipments are quickly replenished, they don't have to wait for the battery to charge. The LP Gas-based forklift can be used in closed environments due to its low level of contamination.

On the other hand, the Industrial Forklift Association (ITA) has categorized forklifts into 7 classes, each with differentiated design and applications:

Class I forklift

Electric motor vehicles with three solid tires and a rear counterweight to prevent rollovers. It has an interior seat for the operator. According to the model, they support a load capacity of up to 3 tons.

Class II forklift

Small-sized, electric motor equipment suitable for confined spaces, such as warehouse aisles; In addition, they have solid tires. Among the best known models of this class are:

• Reach trucks: Reach a lift level of up to 10 m. Its rear counterweight allows maneuvers with greater safety. It has a load capacity of 1500 kg to 200 kg.

• Orderpickers: Designed to transport several small loads at the same time. It offers the possibility for the operator to rise to the desired rack height and choose the material to load. Its capacity ranges from 1000 kg to 2000 kg.

• Turret trucks: They have forks that can rotate up to 90 °, at the operator's choice. It allows the load to be lifted up to 14 m, making it easier to place materials in the rack. Its load capacity is around 1.2 tons.

Class III forklift

They are small forklifts that are operated manually, like forklifts. Its handles are usually in the back, although there are models that place it in the center.

Class IV and V forklifts

Internal combustion vehicles, with counterweight and an internal seat for the operator. Those of class IV have solid tires, while those of the V, inflatable.

Class VI and VII forklifts

Forklifts of these classes have been specially designed for difficult terrain, so their most common use is in agricultural areas, farms, construction sites, etc.
